for Pirate Bay

"The four defendants in the Swedish trial of The Pirate Bay have been found guilty and sentenced to a year in prison and $3.6m fine. I don't know much about Swedish copyright law -- and the defense rested on the technical boundaries what constitutes an infringement -- so I have no idea if this is the kind of judgment that is likely to survive the inevitable appeal. I need help.

Had a fun easter weekend away. Climbed a big tree. Saw karrie (sp?) trees and tinkle trees which are very cool trees indeed! The camera was fucking up a lot so i didn't get as many pictures of the trip as i would have liked. But i have some black and white prints to make up and scan later on. Photos i have now are up at www.flickr.com/swiechnik

Went fishing. I was surprised at how much Albany (australia) and the place we went fishing in rockingham reminded me of the coast of maine. Strange! But fishing was a blast, and we've made a promise to get down to the shack in rockingham and go fishing more often. Good times.

Film wise:

For my film and video production unit we split up into groups of four to make short films. The film my group is doing is the one that i wrote and storyboarded entitled Public Urination. Some of you may remember the poem i wrote in high school of the same title. It's the same story, only in film version and with animation added. It's the tragic story of a boy in high school terrified of people outside of the toilet hearing him pee. Yup. That's it.

I am not directing. I've let one of the other students, James, take the directors seat on this. I'm in charge of art direction, audio, and animation. So this week i'm going to have two test animations done for him, and i'm going out later today to get some test audio recorded. Yup... good times. I have to get a lot done ahead of time because of the following news.

I"M GOING TO BE IN IN NEW ENGLAND BETWEEN MAY 1st AND MAY 11th.

yup yup. Booked tickets yesterday. Going through singapore this time. Which excites me as it will be my first time on a third continent. Finally goddamnit! though i'll spend my time in the airport, i've still never been to asia. Almost booked it to spend two days in tokyo before arriving in new england, but i really couldn't afford that.

But yes, will be in keene for the film festival, graduation, and the BOC end of school year meeting.

So that's my life right now. Now i must off to develop and print some photos, do some sound recording, and get back to animation.

Much love my friends!

Adios

Uh, how does this thing work again

<his voice echoes as he wanders through a vast cacophonous lair full of rusted machine parts.>

it's been so long since i've posted.

Well. My semester is going swimmingly. I'm really much happier with my school this semester than last time. I think it's because i get a bit more creative control over what i'm doing. We'll see if they actually let me.

Taking a scriptwriting class, and i've written two and a half short films in the last few months, which i'm pretty impressed with, cause i haven't actually "written" anything of interest since high school. I posted the more complete one at fortheilliterate.wordpress.com.

the second one is the one i'm hoping to actually make for my intro do video production unit. if they let me. right now it's a few minutes longer than it's supposed to be, and i'm still revising it. have to keep it short but still feel like it has some essence to it.

it truly is far more complicated than it should be.

sigh.

but yeah, much excitement for the future.

Won free tickets to see "MARY and MAX" next weekend, at an event where the writer/director will be... speaking to us? i'm not sure, but i'm excited.

just so you know: mary and max is a feature length claymation film staring phillip seymore hoffman and is made by an australian writer/director adam something or other. Look it up damnit, this is the information age. or possibly the post information age. i'm not sure. can't find the right information on that. I'll check wikipedia later.

anyway... yeah... excitement.

became a member of fremantle film and television institute. was thinking of taking a few courses there. but they're expensive.

Yeah, felt like i had a lot more to say, but i guess i don't.

Simple story is, i'm happy where i am. Miss lots of people. hoping to see them all again, and possibly get into some crazy foolish lifestyle shinanagans with several of them.

we'll see...

thanks again for reading

I'll have internet back at the new house in 10 to 15 days.

Since the last time i posted i guess a lot has happened.

We moved house. Jane bought a place and we've been working on it since. It's becoming quite fantastic and will get better. Pictures up once we have internet at the house again. It's working out quite well though, but in my opinion still has a bit of work to go. house warming in a few weeks and hopefully as much as possible will be done by then. Including the bar will be finished... we've started it, but it needs more work. the lounge will be cleaned and organized. the pool table will exist. i doubt the roof deck will be built by then, but i'd like to have started it at least. I want to get that done before i go back to school, but i'm not sure that will work out.

We have a dog. His name is Jaxon. He's a Staffy/Ridgeback and he's adoreable. Likes hoses, doesn't bark ever, is fairly loyal. Can take him to the beach and let him off lead and he'll hang around us and attack the waves. He's 4 years old. will play fetch selectively. Knows sit and stay, but not a lot of other commands. will hang out happily, and doesn't complain a lot. Starting training as soon as jane's brother gets a dog too, so they can train together.

I'm starting work on a hefty project, that i won't really announce publically until i know it's going to work.

similarly working on a project with lauren. Very exciting. Would love some help on this one. If any of you have stories from your childhood (younger than 12 or 13) that are sexually based, or death based, or in some way represent how you felt powerless and controled, but are also interesting and bazaar, and untold in most conventional fiction and non fiction let me know. Example: little boy 8ish not knowing how suicide works but knowing it exists writes a will/suicide note and lays in bed. decides now he'll die but doesn't know how. eventually falls asleep.
Example: little boy 4 not knowing what sex is has fetishized game with friend where they kill eat and cook him all while he enjoys it.
please... would love to compile these type stories into something. Send me an email if you don't want to post publically here. Anna! i'm sure you have something interesting you can share!

anyway, that is all for now i suppose. i'll catch up with you all later. Miss you mucho!

adios

Hawaii

I landed in Honolulu 45 minutes after taking off in perth. I had three flights in that amount of time... went somewhere i didn't expect, and visited with family. It was a strange sort of 45 minutes.

Got to the airport Saturday morning and found out that my flight was cancelled.

Here's a little bit of information you need to know upfront before the story begins:

-I'm in Hawaii for two weeks visiting family and having thanksgiving

-I booked a flight to sydney and back, and a flight from sydney to honolulu and back. These flights were booked seperately.

-I booked cheap, so my flights were not flexible and if i wanted to change them i would have to do it 24 hours in advance.

SO! I'm in Perth airport and my flights are canceled. Fortunately enough, i didn't pack any check luggage, otherwise i wouldn't be in Honolulu right now.

They made me stand in a long line and wait to find out what would happen to me. A tall new zealand man was standing next to me in line asking me repeatedly about the flight cancellation, and telling me he was going to new zealand. Don't know what happened to him because when i got to the front they told me i had two options.

ONE: catch a flight to melbourne and make a connection flight to sydney getting me there at 3:40pm

TWO: wait and catch a flight directly to sydney that would get me there at 10:30pm and i would be refunded for my ticket.

My flight out of sydney was scheduled to depart at 6pm and as such i needed to be checked in at the terminal at 5pm or else i would forfeit my seat on the plane and not be refunded for my money. As much as i would have loved to be given my moneys back on this flight and fly for free, i would be losing the money i spent on my syd to hon flight which was more expensive. So i didn't have a choice really, i had to catch the flight to melbourne and hope that there weren't an delays, arrive in sydney and move as quickly as possible to the international terminal.

My flight in melbourne was delayed by twenty minutes meaning that i landed there at 4pm giving me an hour to get to the terminal and check in, which seams reasonable minus the fact that once i got to the terminal i would have to wait in line for 30 to 40 minutes meaning i only had twenty minutes or so to get to the international terminal which is not right next to the one i was arriving at.

FORTUNATELY!!!! My brother came to my rescue and was waiting for me in sydney when i got off the plane and got me into a taxi and we sped off to catch my next flight. I checked in at 4:55pm. Then i had to run to catch my flight so my visit with my brother was very short.

Couldn't sleep for the entire flight out here, so after arriving at 6:45 AM saturday morning here in sydney i survived for a decent ammount of time before passing out for most of the day.

In that time i did manage to get some new shorts, wash my clothes, have some food, unpack, and take my computer in to get fixed. Hooray! If all goes well, i'll have my computer back before i leave.

Other news to update on:

I have a job. I'm a photographer, sort of. Jayne Twiby got me a job with her work doing some photography work. If all goes well for now i'll get a more full time job doing photography and possibly some video work. It's not great for now, but it's a foot in the door and it's money. The way Jayne talks it up, it sounds really great after i'm there for a while if i do well. Somehow i got this job without actually showing them any photos or work i've ever done on anything. They didn't ask me for any information. Jayne pitched me to them, they met up with me, decided they liked me before the interview began and we just started talking legistics. So yeah... strange. Continuing my streek of jobs that i haven't had to apply for. I love it.

For now, however, i'll be doing santa photos. Pictures of little demons on santas lap in malls. Dredge. But that's just for a few weeks and i need the money even if it's not a lot. It's not a lot of hours and i'll still have sundays off if i'm working in a certain place, which will mean i'll get some money and be able to have the time to do work on and at the new house including moving stuff and maybe asbestos work and work on this horror film project, presuming a good script is thrown at me in the next few weeks.

Yeah... horror film. Me... wierd right. I hate those things. Don't really think it's going to happen but who knows. Mat knows some guy who can get us into a thingy if we make a film in the next few months. Ten minutes or less (i know i'm being vague).

I'm not writing it, thank god, just putting in sugjestions and DOING EVERYTHING ELSE. matt doesn't seam to be aware of what it takes to make a good film. Most people aren't. But if it is done, it too is a good foot in the door. So... let's hope it works out with great amounts of ease *Cough*.

And that's the update you've all been waiting for. Finished the semester out but haven't heard back yet on how i did. I'm hoping i passed.

Anyway, i'll Speak to some of you very soon i hope. Adios,

OUT

Police intercept golf-buggy highway chase

Posted Tue Oct 21, 2008 7:36am AEDT

Darwin police say a group of boys stole a golf buggy
from a resort on the outskirts of Darwin and were chased down the
Stuart Highway by resort employees in another golf cart.

Watch commander Gavin Kennedy says the low-speed chase went down the Stuart Highway about 5:00pm yesterday.

Senior Sergeant Kennedy says the chase ended when a traffic policeman arrived.

He says the boys fled into bushland but one, a 10-year-old, was arrested by the officer.

Computerworld - No opt-out of filtered Internet:

In a move that seems to be happening without comment from the
Australian media, the Australian government is introducing a censorship
regime ostensibly targeted at stopping teenagers accessing online porn.

But rather than being an opt-in system, it's "opt-out". I use the
scare quotes because, and this is most insidious part, you can't
actually opt out - you can merely be placed on a alternative blacklist
which, instead of blocking "content innappropriate for children", block
any material deemed to be illegal.

The fact that it will likely reduce everyone's internet
performance is secondary; It will most likely incorrectly block 1% of
sites, and now what you are allowed to view online is determined and
controlled by the state (although most likely quite inaccurately).

The rationale is that since they're setting it up anyway, they're morally obliged to block traffic deemed illegal:

"Illegal is illegal and if there is infrastructure in place to block it, then it will be required to be blocked — end of story."

I don't think I need to go into too much detail about the potential threat to our civil liberties.

People of Australia, please write to your MPs to voice your opposition to this.
